Sustainability certificates for Coffee Balls

Coffee Balls are sustainable. Here you'll find out how certification ensures that sustainability standards are upheld.

CoffeeB: Sustainable from the raw materials to recycling

Coffee beans are the primary raw ingredient of our Coffee Balls. Depending on the variety, they come from many different coffee-growing regions around the globe: Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Vietnam, India, Guatemala, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Kenya. We take our responsibilities seriously, even during the coffee cultivation stage. Every Coffee Ball bears the seal of either the Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade, or our Bio label. These sustainability certificates are designed to guarantee that coffee balls are not just low on waste, but also socially acceptable and environmentally friendly. Here you'll find out more about the various coffee-ball certificates.

What is the Rainforest Alliance?

Most of our Coffee Balls are certified in line with the Rainforest Alliance standard. Other products bear the Bio or Fairtrade label. The Rainforest Alliance promotes more sustainable cultivation methods and thus guarantees a better future to humans and the environment. Rainforest Alliance-certified farmers are bound by a stringent standard covering sustainable farming and professional farm management. To this end, they are trained in agricultural methods that ensure greater environmental protection as well as higher crop yields and thus increase their income. Certified coffee farms therefore actively help to protect the environment, for instance through careful use of natural resources, minimal and systematic use of artificial fertilisers and plant protection products as well as waste avoidance. Certified coffee plantations must also comply with minimum social standards: they support the development of living wages, provide appropriate accommodation, and ensure access to clean drinking water, sanitary facilities, and medical care. The Rainforest Alliance also promotes gender equality and combats discrimination and child labour.

What does Fairtrade do?

Fairtrade ensures partnerships on equal terms between producers and purchasers. The Fairtrade label denotes products made in compliance with specific social, ecological, and economic requirements. Thanks to Fairtrade, coffee producers receive both minimum prices and bonuses. To this end, the producers must be organised into cooperatives. Fairtrade helps smallholders as well as other coffee workers to improve their living standards on their own. In addition to socially acceptable and environmentally friendly production, the standard also ensures fair trading conditions.

What does "Bio" mean?

Our Bio label promotes the organic production of foods in harmony with nature. The welfare of people, animals and plants as well as fertile soil, natural diversity, and careful use of water are equally important to organic farmers. Genetically modified organisms are forbidden. The use of chemical and synthetic additives and ingredients is avoided. This lessens the negative impact on soil, water bodies, and the environment. Air transportation is in principle prohibited for Migros Bio products. Preference is given to rail and waterway transportation. We offer our organic Coffee Balls in combination with the Fairtrade label. This guarantees that all our raw materials are sourced along a socially, economically, and ecologically sustainable supply chain. Find out where some of our organic coffee comes from in our article on Mamahuaca.

What does the DIN CERTCO certificate on garden compostability guarantee?

The DIN CERTCO institute is an independent, neutral and leading testing authority for the certification of the compostability of products. Products that are completely compostable and that meet all of the requirements of standard NF T 51-800 receive the label "DIN-tested compostable". Our Coffee Balls are made from pressed coffee and a thin protective plant-based coating that preserves the coffee's wonderful aroma. Our coffee balls are therefore compostable and bear the DIN CERTCO label. Find out how to compost the Coffee Balls here.
