Coffee grounds as plant fertiliser

Plants and vegetables require nutrients to grow. They mainly get these from the soil. The more a plant grows, the more nutrients it draws from the earth – until the nutrients in the soil are gradually used up. That's why it's important to add fertiliser to your plants' soil at regular intervals. Did you know that Coffee Balls can help you with precisely this?

Of course you can buy fertiliser in a shop. But you can also make it yourself - it's cheap and easy. If you like drinking coffee, you'll end up with coffee grounds after brewing. Many people simply throw these coffee grounds away. However, they make the perfect fertiliser for your plants. That's not just sustainable. It's also cheap and practical. It saves the money you would have spent on fertiliser, cuts down on waste, and returns valuable nutrients to the nutrient cycle.

Your brewed Coffee Balls can also be used just like coffee grounds to make fertiliser or compost. Coffee Balls don't contain any plastic or aluminium and are made from high-quality roasted coffee. Once the collection tray of your CoffeeB coffee machine is full, you can use its contents as fertiliser for your plants without any problem.

What plants should I add coffee grounds to as fertiliser?

I'll show you five ways in which you can easily transform your used Coffee Balls into fertiliser for your soil:

  • Mix coffee grounds into plant soil before potting: While you're in the process of planting pots or garden beds, mix some coffee grounds in with the soil. This helps the soil absorb nitrogen, which is crucial for plant growth. You can add up to a litre of coffee grounds to a ten-litre pot. If you would like to mix your used Coffee Balls into your soil, first let them cool completely, then break them apart with your hands or a gardening tool before mixing them in with the soil.

  • Simply pop Coffee Balls into your plant pots: Your used Coffee Balls can simply be buried at a depth of 8-10cm. From there they will supply the soil around your plants with useful nutrients.

  • Use the coffee water: The collection tray of your CoffeeB coffee machine is subdivided and collects not only your brewed Coffee Balls but also residual water from the system. This so-called "coffee water" can be reused in its entirety. Mix it with half a litre of water and use this to water your plants. The coffee water acts as a mild fertiliser.

  • Use compostable Coffee Balls as a snail and slug deterrent: If you grow leafy greens in your garden, it is sometimes unavoidable that snails and slugs will try to eat them. However, freshly brewed coffee can keep snails and slugs away from your vegetables! To this end, grind down freshly brewed and cooled Coffee Balls into a powder. Then sprinkle these Coffee-Ball grounds around the stems of your vegetables. The coffee grounds ensure that snails stay away from your vegetables.

  • Coffee in compost: Coffee grounds – which includes brewed Coffee Balls – can be composted in every way. To this end, read our text on how you can easily make compost from coffee grounds. Coffee Balls are 100% compostable.

What plants should I add coffee grounds to as fertiliser?

Fertiliser made from coffee grounds is particularly suitable for plants that prefer slightly acidic soils. These include broccoli, beans, chicory, carrots, cucumbers, potatoes, aubergines, lettuce, radishes, and even tomatoes.

All these simple techniques for turning coffee grounds into fertiliser are suitable for both indoor and outdoor plants. If you add coffee-ground fertiliser to your leafy plants, they'll soon grown and thrive. Your vegetable patch will thank you for using coffee fertiliser by producing a plentiful harvest.

How often you should add fertiliser to your plants depends largely on the plant variety. In general, you should add fertiliser to your plants every two to three weeks. Store your used Coffee Balls in a container and use them to strengthen your plants.
